Your writing is my priority.

I tackle projects of any size, offering personalized, objective attention.

I keep my business small to ensure that every writer’s work receives the care it deserves.

If you could benefit from an experienced, confidential editor and writing coach to take your writing to the next level, I'm here to help.

Together we will create something that has clarity, authenticity and impact.

Do you need someone to line-edit your work? I’ll scour your writing for lack of clarity, keeping your voice consistent.

If you need a proofreader, I’ll ensure your writing is completely error-free, without grammar, punctuation or word usage mistakes, misspellings or formatting errors.

I specialize in editing college application essays. I can help shape your words to create the clearest picture of who you are.

I also provide writing, editing and proofreading services to non-profit organizations and small businesses.

Let’s discover what we can accomplish together.

Let’s talk about College Essays.

Why hire me?

I’m an experienced editor.

I don’t have a staff or a drop-down list of locations. When we work together, I’ll focus only on you, giving you my undivided personal attention—exactly what you need and deserve to craft the best essays. To use your talents, what you know, and what you’ve learned about yourself, honed into a 700-word piece of writing.

You may even learn something about yourself in the process!

I can be objective in a way your parents, family or friends can’t be. I may know you only through your writing, like an admissions counselor, making a decision based on words on a page.

I’m a college graduate and a mom. I understand what it takes to get into college. When my son applied to University of Richmond—his “reach” school—the admissions director asked me to write an essay about him. To tell them something about him they wouldn’t know from his application. It was a unique opportunity and a good one. He was accepted, attended and graduated in 2018.

Applying to colleges can be overwhelming. Taking SATs and ACTs, crafting a resume. filling out the Common app and the FASFA, completing individual college applications and sending fees, gathering transcripts, community service reports and teacher recommendations. It’s enough to make your head spin.

Let me be your wise and trusted writing coach.

I offer both hourly and package rates.

A well-crafted essay combines where you’ve been, what you’ve accomplished.
And where you want to go.

Packages

Full

I give you personalized attention from start to finish, in person or via Zoom, Skype or FaceTime.

We’ll set deadlines for each part of the process, emailing each other in between sessions to exchange drafts and comments. We’ll discuss what interests you, to discover a topic.

You write a rough draft. I read and suggest edits, line by line, to clarify your intent. I check your facts. We think of an intriguing title, one that draws the reader in. We trim words, to reach the word count.

We may read it aloud, listen the rhythm, of how the words flow or get stuck. We look at those important transitions between paragraphs.

Do you stay true to your topic? Does your essay answer the question?  We take another look at the “final” essay and delete unnecessary words. Look for misspellings or other mistakes.

Does this essay give the truest sense of who you are? Can we hear your voice?

Copy editing

This may be done by email. You send me your rough draft and I suggest edits, and mechanics like spelling, punctuation and grammar. We work together to keep the flow of your writing consistent.

It’s a more in-depth process than proofreading. I help to make your writing more clear, concise and accurate, still keeping your voice.

Proofreading

This is the most basic offering. You send me your essay. I read it carefully, making sure everything is correct: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, letters transposed, missing words and inconsistencies in format (bold and italics, fonts and spacing.)

We go beyond spell-check and auto-correct to catch mistakes that a computer might miss. It’s not about revising but correcting mistakes.

Resumes

**We can also work on your resume with any of the above packages. Since the resume must be attached, it’s a crucial part of your application, as well as making it easier to complete the activities section of the Common App.

Please contact me at awordowl@gmail.com for rates.

I offer both hourly and package rates.

What’s your story?

Tell me.

I’ll keep your words, your style. Your voice.

Or if you’re not sure what your voice sounds like, we can discover that, too.

Writing is never easy for anyone. You have to be vulnerable. You’re writing about something intensely personal to someone unknown.

You can use an editing app, but in the end, a live person is going to read your work.

Your writing deserves a live editor, too.

I offer both hourly and package rates.
